Darius Jones, is an alto saxophonist, composer, and producer. He joined the New York music community in 2005, after living and studying in Richmond, Va. In his short time here, he has amazed and inspired musicians and audiences from widely divergent backgrounds with his meticulously honed musical gifts. Soul-power is at his foundation; forward looking expression always at the fore.
Darius comes from a diverse musical background that has lead to his unique, alternative, and soulful approach to music. Jones has composed and performed in a wide variety of areas such as electro-acoustic music, chamber ensembles, contemporary jazz groups, avant-garde jazz groups, modern dance performances, and multi-media events. Darius enjoys playing with a steady group of artists and improvisers.

Jones is a rising star on the international scene thanks to the success of two recent AUM Fidelity releases, his 2009 debut, Man’ish Boy (A Raw & Beautful Thing) and Little Women's first full-length recording, Throat. Critics have called him “a singular talent” (Brian Morton, Jazz Journal), “a dramatic new voice on alto saxophone” (Richard Kamins, Hartford Courant) and “a skilled composer, a hugely soulful saxophonist, and an assured leader” (François Couture, AllMusic.com).
The Village Voice's Jim Macnie adds, “Pure power rings through the metal of his alto sax, and the frenetics that invariably erupt are often grounded in something akin to deep spirituality. That’s why some cite him as a blend of Albert Ayler and Arthur Blythe. There’s no way to take your ear from him once he’s got you in his crosshairs.”
New York Times – Critic’s Choice
“Darius Jones has the capacity for a proud, rafters-raising tone on alto saxophone, and as an improviser he’s fearless but disciplined. (...) A couple of months ago he released “Man’ish Boy (A Raw & Beautiful Thing),” a robustly accomplished debut that confirms not only the blunt fact of his arrival but also the ceaseless vitality of his chosen tradition. A keen awareness of that tradition underpins the album, for reasons of spirit and style. Mr. Jones, who is in his early 30s, wisely teamed up with a pair of sympathetic mentors, the drummer Rakalam Bob Moses, 61 , and the multi-instrumentalist Cooper-Moore, 63. Their interaction is open-hearted and intense (...) it adds up to a powerfully soulful blend." –Nate Chinena
