Salt Presents: Loft/Lab Jazz SeriesCurated by Destination: Out Thursday, April 14thAdmission $15 Doors open at 7:30pm. Show starts at 8:00pm Destination: OUT’s Loft/Lab jazz series recreates the excitement of the great jazz lofts of the 1970s. It's a lab where adventurous musicians try out new ideas, configurations, and compositions. The series features many of the brightest new stars and serves up live music without a net.Harris Eisenstadt's Canada Day played its first concert July 1, 2007. The group's name is a dedication to drummer/composer Eisenstadt's home country - inspired by his experiences as a Canadian living in the US for almost twenty years. Canada Day has performed regularly for almost four years throughout North America; in our home base, New York City, on tour in the Northeast US, and throughout Canada. Canada Day has released two recordings (an eponymous debut on Clean Feed in 2009 and a second recording, Canada Day II, on Songlines, due April 12th), and in both cases the goal was to write a book of songs that were ambitious in their structural design, innovative in their strategies for mixing composition and improvisation, always striving to combine adventurousness and accessibility. Canada Day is Nate Wooley on trumpet, Matt Bauder on tenor sax, Chris Dingman on vibraphone, Elvind Opsvik on bass, and Eisenstadt on drums. The band is known for the way it blends “a mid-60s Blue Note vibe with elastic post-rock grooves and subtle West African influences" (Troy Collins/All About Jazz), and Eisenstadt emphasizes that they also explore areas of improvisation that are outside of jazz, such as Nate Wooley's dense, active, non-pitched textures on trumpet. The April 14 show at Loft/Lab is the concluding gig of Canada Day's East Coast tour. They'll perform with a special octet version of the band, adding horn players Ray Anderson, Joe Daley and Jason Mears. (Garth Stevenson will be in for Opsvik on bass for the tour.) Entrances at the Salt SpaceWe’re excited to announce that the face-lift on our 1160 Broadway entrance is completed. We will continue to use both entrances, but please use the entrance at 1158 Broadway for our Loft/Lab Jazz Series. |
