The Salt Space is proud to host Through the Eyes of Hope Project's fifth exhibition in the United States, showcasing work from photography students in Rwanda and the Bronx.
Through the Eyes of Hope is an international art initiative developed by Photojournalist Linda Smith in an effort to share the potential that photography holds for children, by not only providing them with documentation of their lives but also allowing them to experience a sense of joy and fun. The project has two goals; to teach basic photographic principles to extremely disadvantaged children and to educate children who are interested in learning about the children of other cultures.
In January 2007, Linda ran a pilot project in Rwanda with eleven orphans from the Kagugu School, who had lost their parents to the 1994 genocide and AIDS. The workshops proved to be very successful and had a great impact on the eleven students. Since the initial workshops at Kagugu, many of the children have begun to earn money for school fees by photographing weddings and portraits. Each child in the photography program is given a film camera to keep. Since the initial pilot program at the Kagugu School, teacher Prossy Yohana has extended the photography program to benefit many other deserving children. She meets with the students every Saturday and helps the children as they print out photos that they can sell. Some of the students at the Kagugu School have completed photographic internships at photography studios and magazines in Kigali.
Currently, Linda is in Rwanda, working with her team to raise funds to open a photo studio there, which would help to provide a sustainable program for the children.
The exhibition at the Salt Space will showcase the work from students at the Kagugu Primary School in Kigali, Rwanda, Muyennzi Primary School in Mayange, Rwanda and St. Athanasius School in Bronx, New York; as well as select pieces from Linda Smith. The exhibition will be on display in the Salt Space from August 12-August 26 with an opening reception on August 12 from 7:00pm-10:00pm. The gallery will be open by appointment Monday-Friday 11:00am-5:00pm. Call 917.475.1770 to arrange a viewing. Join us on Thursday, August 26 at 7:00pm for a special silent auction and closing show to benefit the Through the Eyes of Hope Project.
